Peter Imitates Jesus in Acts 12

After Herod kills James with the sword, and because this act "pleased the Jews," Herod arrested Peter and put him in prison. He put 16 guards over him to keep him securely until after Passover. Why after Passover? Maybe to avoid the possibility of the people asking for him to be released, since a prisoner was traditionally released at Passover by their choice. It seems Herod wished to keep Peter in prison.

Being put in prison is symbolic of death. This account in Acts 12 of Peter's imprisonment and release shows remarkable similarities to the Lord's crucifixion and resurrection.

Jesus is crucified, but innocent.

Peter is imprisoned, but has done nothing wrong.

Jesus' disciples are together praying and contemplating His death.

Peter's brethren are together praying and contemplating his imprisonment.

Jesus is miraculously resurrected.

Peter is miraculously released from prison (symbolic of resurrection).

Jesus is first greeted by a woman after His resurrection.

Peter is greeted by a young woman after his release.

Jesus' disciples do not believe the report of the woman that Jesus is alive.

Peter's brethren do not believe the report of the young woman that Peter is at the gate.

Jesus disappears for a time after His initial appearance to His disciples.

Peter leaves after his brethren are convinced it's him and then the record of him in Acts is essentially finished.

Jesus told His disciples that if they believed in Him, they would do the works that He did, and greater works would they do because He was going to His Father. He works in us to do these greater works also. Can we recognize them? Maybe, maybe not.
